“..I have to say that the performers give you things you don’t know what to ask for, or don’t know you are asking for. The interesting thing about the “cinematographic model” is what happens during the process of performance, which is at the same time the process of the picture-making. As I said, I often have it so that I do not know the performers too well, personally. I try to communicate some things about what I want to do with them, but some things I don’t concern myself with communicating. Sometimes it’s good to be improperly understood, it creates some openings. So performers don’t, can’t, know exactly what you want. Still, you get things, things you don’t know you want, things they don’t know you want, things they don’t know they are going to do. But they happen somehow, and subsist inside the structure of the image.” Jeff Wall, Interview 1998
